I often get asked two questions:

“What is Cross…Fit?” To this, I usually blink a few times, slowly explain the unique fusion of gymnastics, sprinting and weightlifting, and see if their eyes begin to glaze over.

The other is, “well… what kind of people do you have in there?” To this I usually blink a few times, start to give every member’s life story, and then pause for a moment and realize there is a truly inspiring diversity among all of you CrossFitters. You’re not all fire fighters. You’re not all teachers. You’re not all collegiate athletes. You’re not all runners, or businessmen, or 20-somethings. You’re not all in the same shape, health, or possess the same physical capacity.

But you are all hard workers. That’s what it comes down to, and that’s what I tell people. There’s no room for laziness in our gyms – it does not lend itself well to CrossFit, or functional fitness in general.

If you’re reading this and not yet a CrossFitter here, don’t base your decision on weight, age, sex, experience, strengths, or weaknesses.

Base it on your work ethic. This will be uncomfortable.
Base it on your resolve. You need to finish.
Base it on your ego. If you have one, it doesn’t belong in here.
Base it on your desire. After all, if you don’t want to be here, we don’t want you, either.

My co-workers always catch me watching WOD videos or clips from the Crossfit games and poke fun saying, “how is Crossfit that cool,” or “Crossfit is stupid.” To those people I say, if you are hung up on the name, Crossfit, don’t be. Try “functional fitness” or “real-world application training.” Will the right training save your life? Quite possibly. Why excel in one area and be poor in others. Why not excel in all areas. Better yourself and come in and give it a try. You won’t regret it.

Wait… You mean doing back and bi’s Monday and yoga on Tuesday isn’t prepping me for life?
